 Planning Information

Passport

To travel to Haiti you must have a current passport.  You need to allow 6-8 weeks to be sure you have your passport in time to make the mission trip.  Contact the nearest post office or county court house for an application and mailing information.  You must have an original birth certificate and two passport photos to apply for passport.  These photos can be obtained from some drug stores, photo shops or Wal-Mart.

Click these links to go to the State Department website for more passport information and passport application .

Shots/Immunizations/Medications
  • To travel to Haiti it is advisable to protect yourself from various medical risks.  You will need Hepatitis A (two parts), Tetanus, Typhoid (two parts) and Polio.  Some of these you may already have.
  • They are only available by appointment, so call and make arrangements as soon as possible.  They may be only available on certain days.   Contact Paula Heart in Hilton Head at (843)842-6357 or Cindy Brush at MUSC in Charleston at (843)792-9200 or 792-6174.
  • You will need to take a malaria tablet the week before you go on the mission trip, one while you are in Haiti and for four weeks after you return. Take one tablet each week for 6 weeks.  They should be taken on the same day of the week.   Ask us about tablets.
Checked Luggage-Two at 50 lbs each maximum
  • You are entitled to two check-on pieces of luggage that goes in the storage compartment of the plane.  Luggage is limited to 62 inches total for length/width/height and a maximum weight of 50 lbs. each.
  • The use of trunks (footlockers) is encouraged because they pack much easier and will protect the contents better.  You can not lock your luggage on the plane but you can use plastic ties to keep them from opening during travel (only after they are checked at the airport by security).  You may also use large pieces of luggage instead of trunks
  • You can usually carry on one or two small pieces of luggage or backpacks on the plane. They must fit under your seat or in the overhead compartment.  I prefer a backpack that you can carry with you everywhere you go in Haiti with your snacks, personal items and camera
